Oracle Database Administrator (Cloud) – Job Description

Job Summary

The Oracle Database Administrator (Cloud) is responsible for managing, securing, and optimizing Oracle databases hosted in cloud and hybrid environments, with a strong focus on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The role ensures high availability, performance, scalability, security, and cost efficiency of cloud‑based database platforms supporting mission‑critical applications.


Key Responsibilities

Cloud Database Administration (OCI‑Focused)

  • Provision, configure, and manage Oracle Databases on OCI:
    • Oracle Autonomous Database (ATP/ADW)
    • Database Cloud Service (DBCS)
    • Exadata Cloud Service / Exadata Cloud@Customer
  • Manage Single Instance, RAC, CDB/PDB architectures in cloud environments.
  • Perform database lifecycle management: provisioning, scaling, cloning, patching, and decommissioning.

Hybrid & Migration Responsibilities

  • Support hybrid environments (on‑prem + OCI).
  • Plan and execute database migrations to the cloud using:
    • RMAN
    • Data Pump
    • OCI Database Migration Service
    • Goldengate (if applicable)
  • Validate performance and functionality post‑migration.
  • Support cross‑region and cross‑tenancy architectures.

 

High Availability, DR & Resilience

  • Design and manage:
    • OCI Data Guard
    • Automated backups and recovery
    • Cross‑region disaster recovery
  • Perform recovery testing and DR drills.
  • Ensure compliance with RTO/RPO objectives.
  • Manage rolling upgrades and patching with minimal downtime.

Performance & Cost Optimization

  • Monitor and tune databases using:
    • OCI Console
    • AWR / ADDM / ASH
    • OCI Monitoring & Alarms
  • Optimize:
    • Storage (block/object)
    • Compute shapes
    • Licensing and resource utilization
  • Implement cost‑aware architectures and usage tracking (FinOps).

Security, Compliance & Governance

  • Implement cloud security best practices:
    • IAM policies
    • Network security (VCNs, NSGs, Security Lists)
    • Encryption (TDE, OCI Vault)
  • Manage database access controls, auditing, and separation of duties.
  • Support compliance requirements (ISO, SOX, GDPR, etc.).
  • Perform vulnerability remediation and security hardening.

Automation & DevOps Enablement

  • Automate database operations using:
    • Shell scripting
    • SQL / PL/SQL
    • OCI CLI & SDK
    • Terraform / Ansible
  • Integrate database changes into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Support Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for database provisioning.
  • Enable self‑service patterns for development teams.

Monitoring, Incident & Operations Management

  • Set up proactive monitoring, alerts, and dashboards.
  • Troubleshoot cloud‑specific issues (latency, connectivity, scaling).
  • Participate in 24x7 on‑call rotations for production support.
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement preventive controls.

Documentation & Cross‑Team Collaboration

  • Maintain cloud architecture diagrams and operational runbooks.
  • Work closely with:
    • Cloud architects
    • DevOps engineers
    • Application teams
    • Security and compliance teams
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior DBAs.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science / IT or related field
  • Preferred certifications:
    • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Architect or DBA
    • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
    • Exadata / Performance / Security certifications

Soft Skills

  • Strong cloud troubleshooting mindset
  • Automation‑first approach
  • Clear communication with technical and non‑technical teams
  • Ability to work independently in fast‑paced cloud environments
  • Ownership and accountability for production systems

Experience Levels

  • Mid‑Level: 4–7 years (1–2 years cloud exposure)
